Lineworkers are arguably the most crucial function within energy companies and serve as the front-line support in delivering power to customers. They perform very specialized work on the infrastructure that delivers electricity to customers and have an in-depth understanding of electrical circuits of all voltages.

Think you have what it takes to be a lineworker? Lineworkers work in all types of weather and need to develop specific skills in order to do their job well. Some of these skills are:

• Climbing poles or using truck-mounted buckets to reach equipment
• Laying underground cables
• Inspecting and testing power lines
• Enjoy working with others
• Not mind heights or working outdoors

Lineworkers can be trained within their companies, but many begin their career after receiving training at a local technical or community college program. Internal training programs happen when new employees are hired into entry-level positions where they learn from experienced workers at a safe place.

Due to the challenging nature of the work and the high skills needed to perform linework safely and effectively, linework is a very profitable career. Entry-level lineworkers can begin their careers in a salary range of $30,000 – $40,000.
